The term “clean beauty,” while unregulated by the FDA, refers to both an ideological shift about cosmetic standards and an effort by beauty brands to meet consumer demand for healthier formulas.

In the United States, cosmetic standards from 1938 are still referenced as the standard for cosmetic formulations in 2022.

As ingredient standards undergo review, several brands are taking cleaner beauty to the next level with philanthropic efforts.

Cruelty Free International

Cruelty Free International, an organization widely known for the Leaping Bunny cruelty-free certification, collects donations via the Cruelty Free International Trust. The proceeds are currently going to The American Anti-Vivisection Society (AAVS). Donations are accepted at any time.

In response to interest from state advocates and legislators, Breast Cancer Prevention Partners drafted model state legislation to require fragrance ingredient disclosure for cosmetic and personal care products.”

The BCPP has been advocating for safer beauty since 2004, when the Campaign For Safer Cosmetics was launched. The Safer Beauty Bill package, a bill that supports several changes to promote transparency in the beauty and personal care industries, advocates for the following:

  • Full ingredient disclosure
  • Chemical identification numbers for each ingredient (also known as CAS)
  • A fine for violating new ingredient transparency standards proposed by the bill

Beauty Project Share is a self-designated “pass through” organization that collects cosmetics and distributes the products to partnering nonprofit organizations.

“In order for Project  Beauty Share to distribute cosmetics and/or hygiene products to the most women, we serve as a pass through organization, where donations are distributed to vetted nonprofit agencies that directly serve local shelters and social service organizations in the Inland North West.”
